For the ultimate relaxation, go rafting on the Great River in Lethe. Lethe (pronounced Lee-tie by the locals) is nestled in the hills along the banks of the Great River which borders the parishes of Hanover and St. James. Lethe, a former sugar/banana plantation estate now offers river excursions by experienced raft captains.
Enjoy the picturesque scenery while rafting on 30ft long bamboo rafts. The rafts take you along the Great River and under the historic bridge at Lethe, built by slave labor over 200 years ago in 1820. Take a dip in the in the river at suitable locations and enjoy the cool waters as you go up and down the river. Purchase jerk chicken and beverages among other things from raft “shops”. These floating shops along the river are provided by ingenious Jamaicans.
Get up and dance to the rhythm of the music blaring from the raft “shops”. Enjoy the foot and leg scrubs provided by the raft captains, using limestone found along the river bank. The captains are patient, informative, friendly and polite adding to your overall rafting experience.
